Frequently Asked Questions & Leather Care Guidance
Belt and Dog Collar Sizing
Q: How can I ensure to get the right size belt?
A: We recommend using a soft tape measure through your trouser belt loops with a snug but not tight fit. Please watch our video below for a simple guide.
Please note that simply using trouser sizes may be an inaccurate guide
In order to avoid disappointment do contact us if you are unsure which size to select and we would be delighted to advise you on how to get the most accurate measurements.
Q: How do I measure my dog for a new collar?
A: To measure your dog for a collar ideally use a cloth or soft measuring tape around where the dog collar will sit comfortably. Do not pull the tape tight but ensure a snug closure. Add an extra inch (approximately 2.5cm) of measurement for a small dog and an extra 2 inches (approximately 5cm) for medium to large dogs. If you do not own a soft measuring tape then use string and measure the string against a normal ruler.
To avoid disappointment please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions about measuring for a dog collar.
Leather Care Guidance
Q: What is the best way to care for leather items?
A: This will depend on the type of leather and its use. However, the general rule is that leather will last better when treated well. Avoid direct sunlight, water and excessive heat. You can use a barely damp cloth or a leather cream cleanser to clean any dirt or debris from the leather. More soiled leather will benefit from a simple glycerin saddle soap. Regular monthly feeding and nourishing with leather balm, leather feed or Neatsfoot oil will keep the leather hydrated and supple especially if it has become wet. You can increase the frequency of the feeding if the leather becomes dry.
Q: Will leather soften over time?
A: This depends on the type of leather and the amount of use the leather item gets. Bridle leathers are less flexible but all leather will “wear in” and become more pliable with usage.
Q: My dog loves swimming. What is the best way to care for his collar?
A: Water exposure will dry the leather and make it more susceptible to damage and limit its lifespan. If the leather is exposed to salt water then wipe it down with a damp cloth (avoid any abrasive sponges or brushes). Leave the collar to air dry at an ambient temperature (avoid use of radiators or fires) and then clean the leather using a saddle soap. After the leather is clean then you can use feeding and nourishing creams or oils to restore moisture to the leather. Oils such as Neatsfoot oil will provide some waterproofing as well.
Q: Are dyed leather items colourfast?
A: We always recommend being cautious. The leather is treated to prevent dye leaching. However, if the coating of the leather is damaged due to water exposure or excessive heat this may cause dye leaching. Avoid submerging products in water and avoid direct sunlight which can bleach the colour from dyed leather. Be careful to avoid dyed leather items rubbing against pale coloured clothing.
